Librarian Accessibility Guide: Getting Started

Purpose of This Guide

The purpose of this guide is to provide VERY BASIC information about common accessibility issues librarians should consider when creating online library guides.

All librarians creating web content need are responsible for ensuring that all students are provided equal access to their content; additional resources on web accessibility best practices & guidelines are provided on the "Additional Resources" tab.

While there are varying degrees of accessibilty need, librarians should consider at least the following three groups:

  • Visually impaired users, who may rely on screen readers & other software to interpret web content.
  • Hearing impaired users who will need text equivalent for all audio or videocasts that require sound.
  • Mobility impaired users who may utilize keyboard or voice commands in lieu of a mouse.
