Social Media: Best Practices

Before Starting

  • Pick the purpose BEFORE the platform
  • Familiarize yourself with the technology
  • Identify learning outcomes (& ensure they are in alignment with course learning objectives)
  • Create specific assignment criteria & rubrics (minimum text/image requirements, how these will be assessed)
  • Have a friend or colleague review the assignment to provide feedback on where clarification may be needed

Introducing the Social Media Assignment

  • Inform your students of the assignment requirements the first day of class so they may withdraw if uncomfortable
  • Discuss online privacy and provide suggestions for keeping their identities and submissions private
  • Plan to reserve a computer-equipped classroom so you may assist students with the initial setup
  • Discuss web accessibility issues & encourage students to follow best practices
  • Provide immediate and frequent feedback for longer-term assignments

Exercise Common Sense

  • Avoid the use of any course-identifying information (i.e. #MGT101)
  • Allow students the option to use an allias
  • Do not provide grades or feedback that may indicate a grade within your publicly viewable comments
